Internal Medicine
When asked what Internal Medicine is, we like to respond, perhaps in a somewhat pretentious way, that it is the specialty closest to the art of medicine.
We internists face difficult clinical problems, of uncertain origin, identifying the crucial elements in the anamnesis (interrogation) and in the physical examination, requesting the adequate studies, to then organizing and interpreting the obtained large amount of data and information.
On a daily basis we face a definitive decision-making process through the integration of our medical knowledge with intuition, our experience and cognitive judgment; this combination defines the art of medicine which is as necessary for the internist as the strength of his scientific knowledge.

“No greater opportunity or obligation can fall the lot of a human being than to be a physician. In the care of suffering he needs technical skill, scientific knowledge and human understanding…It is taken for granted that he has tact, empathy and understanding, since the patient is more than an accumulation of symptoms, signs, functional disorders, organ damage and disturbance of emotions. The patient is a human being who has fears, harbours hopes and therefore seeks relief, help and comfort…”
Harrison´s Principles of Internal Medicine, 1950.
